Massingberd-Mundy A local family history proves to be our ginspiration
Optima created the bottle and label designs for a new craft gin range inspired by the family history of the South Ormsby estate distillery
Written by Julian Havenhand
The award-winning Massingberd-Mundy gin range is crafted and distilled in the Lincolnshire Wolds.
This gin range is inspired by the Massingberd family, who owned the South Ormsby Estate for over 400 years, from the seventeenth century and later became the Massingberd-Mundy’s. Charles Burrell Massingberd inherited the estate in 1802, and it is he and his wife from whom we drew inspiration for the gin range. Charles’ wife was Marie Jeanne Rapigeon of Versailles, and together they had great vision and style, redesigning and expanding the grand estate to their tastes with a touch of Parisian flair. We named the signature dry gin “Burrells” and the pink gin “Marie Jeanne”.
We designed ‘signature’ identities for each gin, which sit alongside the Massingberd-Mundy name and family heraldry. These are printed directly on elegant glass bottles.
Creating character and personality
Optima designed a double-sided label applied to the back of the bottles. From the front, you see the elegant family portraits we adapted of Charles and Marie Jeanne. These are viewed through the gin’s distortion and, in Marie Jeanne’s case, through a bold pink hue. We chose bottles with natural wood stoppers, with elegant black seals applied to bear the family name.
The gins have gone on to win numerous industry awards and accolades.
